Get Your Employees Developed!

Social Learning HappyConvincing already-stretched employees to take time out of their day to develop themselves and their skills is a big ask. There are already too few hours in the day and too few days in the week – how can they possibly add training into the mix without their work suffering!?

It’s a catch-22 situation that in order to improve their performance in the long run, their productivity might need to suffer in the short term. Here are some tips to get your employees developed:

Teach them to own their self-development

Your employees will be more likely to undertake the training necessary when they see it as something meaningful and useful to them, rather than something they’re being told to do. Encouraging them to ‘own’ their self-development will get them invested in the process and ensure they are dedicating the time to improving themselves.

Let them create their own path

One-size-fits-all training simply doesn’t work. Your employees aren’t drones who will rattle through eLearning modules at the same pace. They won’t have the same interests or abilities. And they certainly won’t all require the same level of training to enable them to make progress. That’s why, in order to get your employees developed, you need to let them carve out their own learning paths. They need to be able to control their learning journeys – diverting off on tangents where they uncover a particular interest, taking a non-linear path when they need a bit of extra reinforcement, and skipping ahead if they find a topic too easy. This’ll be much more cost-efficient in the long run than requiring every employee to work through every eLearning module.

Ignite passion for learning

It’s not just the employees undertaking training that need to be involved in the learning process. Their managers need to be invested in it, too. Managers can help to rustle up passion for learning in their employees by coaching and mentoring them throughout the learning journey, emphasising the importance of training and incentivising employees to complete training.
