Why rewards and recognition help to engage eLearners

It works because the learner needs to get Badges in order to appear on the Leaderboard.

Although few adults would admit it, we love outdoing our peers. We devote a vast amount of energy into building our reputations, and many an activity is tied to status.

  • we want to be useful.

This means:

Recognition is given for each time the learner goes on to the LMS and accesses eLearning. 

Each time the learner completes a module, they are rewarded with a Badge, a virtual, digital and totally customisable badge.

This is then posted to your company academy Leaderboard. 

Leaderboards are visible to all those who have preferences to view. 

  • individuals performance and participation are then visible within departments.
  • department performance are in competition with other departments. 
  • when managers login their preferences allow them to see only those they have permissions to view.

Using rewards (badges) and recognition (leaderboards) individual, departments and mangers can track progress and achievement, and they reflect reflect quality, reputation, and influence. Within departments co-workers see who has completed what, and who is still to complete development requirements.

Ultimately visibility breeds increased ownership because "what gets seen gets done".
