Is Moodle Really Right for Your eLearning?
Open source software is becoming increasingly popular with organisations looking to create e learning services, but how useful are they really for creating effective elearning services?
Elearning software Moodle recently announced the launch of their newest version – Moodle 2.0 - promising new updates to their open source platform. But while the attraction of open source elearning software is obvious, the question many people are asking in the elearning industry is, how free really is open source elearning software? Researchers Gartner project that by 2012, 90 percent of the world’s companies will be using open source software at some level within their organisations.
Moodle costs little to install and run but it does have associated maintenance costs, so it is worth researching your options and the associated costs thoroughly before choosing this platform. Fundamentally it is still important to use the right tool for the job in hand - regardless of the cost. Use too cheap a tool and you could then get locked in to the tool and stuck with it if it doesn’t do the job that you want it to do.
Also worth remembering is that when it comes to Moodle, you are on your own in terms of guidance and tips on how to create effective elearning. At Growth Engineering we work with clients to create a suite of learning tools that meet your exact requirements. We focus on the organisation, the business need and what is the desired learning outcome.
