E Learning Academies Can Reduce Staff ‘Sickies’
As new figures show that 15% of all total sick days – totalling 27 million days – are not genuine, costing the country £2.5 billion a year, we look at how effective e learning services and academy training online can increase employee ‘engagement’, reduce ‘sickies’ and improve your company’s productivity.
The latest research from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has revealed that employees took 180 million sick days last year, averaging 6.4 days per person.
While the rate of absence is the lowest since the survey began in 1987, and down slightly from 6.7 days per employee in 2007, the previous surveyed year, the impact of staff absence remains considerable, with the 180 million sick days costing employers about £16.8bn in 2009, as well as indirect costs like reductions in customer service and delays to teamwork
Interestingly, larger employers tended to have higher rates of absence: for those with 5,000 or more staff the average rate was 6.6 days per year, and for those with 500 to 4,999 it was 6.7 days.
However, for organisations with fewer than 50, and between 50 and 199 staff it was 5 days, and for those with 200 to 499 it was 5.8 days.
‘Sickies’ – days taken off by staff pretending to be ill – cost the UK billions each year and are a significant issue for large organisations, where, as the research shows, more people take sick days.
One of the possible reasons for the extra sick days among employees of larger companies could be because of a lack of perceived ‘ownership’ of work and ‘engagement’ with the company and the decision making process.
Improving ‘engagement’ within a large company has been proven to increase productivity and reduce sick days among staff.
